RFA Bayleaf was presented with a Silver Shield for an act of bravery on the part of her Rescue Boat following her receiving a Mayday call from a Taiwanese cargo ship that was reported to be sinking nearby, following a Typhoon in the area.
On the 13th July 1986, whilst RFA Bayleaf was in the South China Sea she received a Mayday call from a Taiwanese cargo ship that was reported to be sinking nearby, following a Typhoon in the area.
RFA Bayleaf responded immediately and after reaching the area, she launched her rescue boat manned by SG1A Phillip Picknett and Christopher Grieve, who managed to get alongside the lifeboat and rescue all fifteen crew members, which was done despite the fact that there were many floating containers in the area, posing a danger to the rescue boat.
RFA Bayleaf was later presented with a Silver Shield for this act of bravery on the part of her Rescue Boat.
