RFA Sir Tristram’s “Fox”

RFA_Sir_Tristram_FoxAt one time the Landing Ship Logistic, RFA Sir Tristram had a ships trophy in her officers lounge that was unusual, to say the least.  The item in question was a “Fox” in a glass case that had been presented to the ship at some time in its long career.  To set the story straight though, it must be stated that the animal in question was actually a vixen that had been stuffed and mounted.  In the mid 1970’s, some waggish officer had inserted a pair of Action Man’s boots into the nether regions of this animal, that is until someone complained.

On the 8th June 1982, RFA Sir Tristram was badly damaged during an air raid at Fitzroy and had to be abandoned, she was later used as an accommodation ship in the Falklands until 1984, when she was returned to the UK and re-built.

The ship re-entered service in 1985 and in 1987 a new “Fox” trophy was presented to the ship to replace the original which had been lost in the fire on the 8th June 1982.  The new trophy was presented to the ship by Chief Officer Jeremy Brooks, who had obtained the animal from the Isle of Wight Hunt.  At one time the “Trophy” was adorned with an Action Man figure in its jaws, dressed in an Argentinean uniform.  The ship was taken out of RFA service on the 17th December 2005 and the whereabouts of this trophy are unknown.
