RFA Oligarch was torpedoed 40 miles WNW of Derna by U 453 under the command of Korvettan Leutenant Egon Reiner Von Schlippenbach whilst on passage in Convoy GTX.3, she managed to make it to Tobruk under her own power, where she was used as a temporary fuel hulk, the ship then joined Convoy VGS.13 for passage to Alexandria where she was used as a fuel hulk .
