Built for Elderslie Martin Steamship Co Ltd for service on the Australian trade, the ship was acquired by the Admiralty in 1914 for conversion to the Dummy Battleship HMS Vanguard.  In 1915 the ship was again converted to a Tanker and Store ship for service at Scapa Flow.  After the First World War RFA Perthshire became Fleet Supply ship for the Mediterranean, and saw service at Malta and in the Bosphorous.  She was sold to Italian interests and broken up at La Spezia in March 1934.
