In Admiralty Service from 1940

Launched as a Commercial War Class Ship, War Subadar.

23 December 1940 sailed Halifax with a cargo of FFO in escorted convoy SC17 to the River Clyde arriving 8 January 1941

3 February 1941 sailed the River Clyde joining escorted convoy OB282 until dispersal on 8 February 1941 and then sailed independently to New York City

30 March 1941 sailed Halifax with a cargo of FFO in escorted convoy SC27 to the River Clyde arriving 19 April 1941  

1 October 1943 sailed Alexandria in convoy XT4, bound for Tripoli with a cargo of 7,000 tons of fuel oil.  The ship was torpedoed at 15:50 hrs on 4 October by U 596 (Oberluitenant zur See Viktor-Wilhelm Nonn), at position 32º 57’ N  21º 11’ E.

Marit was holed between No 2 and 3 tanks and immediately started to list to Starboard, she sank at 17:00 hrs.  The survivors were rescued by a Corvette and taken to Benghazi.  Of the crew of 6 Norwegian, 4 British, 36 Lascar and 6 Chinese seamen, two were lost.
