The George Medal was instituted on 24 September 1940 by King George VI. The medal is granted in recognition of “acts of great bravery.” The George Medal was originally not issued posthumously, however the warrant was amended in 1977 for such awards, several of which have been subsequently made.
The award of this medal permits the usage of a post-nominal GM.
